The freezing of human eggs for use later on has become very popular. However there is now a warning for those considering doing it.

Anyone considering this action must be aware of the following

  • There are side effects from the ovary-stimulating drugs used to retrieve eggs.
  • Women who freeze eggs before age 35 will likely never need to use them.
  • There's a possibility that none of the stored eggs will survive.
All of this technology is relatively new and it is not clear how it will work in the future. It is still an experimantal procedure.

This does not mean that the procedure should never be used, there are many valid situations where it is a good solution to a particular problem. The problem is that there are expense, possible problems and unknowns associated with a procedure in the early stage of its life.

Egg freezing came about as a means of preserving fertility for young women or girls diagnosed with cancer or other serious illness that would destroy their ovaries. It also is marketed as a way to help women postpone conception, as fertility rapidly declines beyond age 35.

The Eggs contain lots of water, making them more vulnerable to freezing and thawing. Ice crystals can form during either process, injuring or even destroying the eggs.

It is very expensive and women who spend more than $10,000 to freeze eggs but there is a calculating a 2% to 4% chance of a live birth for every thawed egg.
