If you eat a good balanced diet you should not need to take any supplements. If you do want to take a health supplement, make sure you take one which is specifically for pregnant (or those trying) women.These supplements generally do not contain vitamin A which may cause developmental problems in the foetus. Your doctor can advise you on which supplements to take.Folic Acid
Folic acid is one of the B vitamins and all women who are trying for a baby should take it. Folic acid reduces the risk of having a child with spina bifida.You should continue taking folic acid for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
Your GP can perscribe a folic acid supplement.
Avoid certain foods
Foods to avoid include
- Liver - Contains Vitamin A
- Lightly-cooked eggs - Possibility of Salmonella poisioning
- Undercooked meats - Possibility of catching listeria
- Soft Cheese - Possibility of catching listeria
