Mothers Development for month 9 of pregnancy

  • You may be counting the days, but only 1 in 20 babies are born on their due date, so you may go earlier or even later, especially if it is your first baby.
  • You should have your hospital bag packed and be ready to go at any time.
  • If your baby is breech, you may need a cesarean or your doctor might recommend 'turning the baby' where your abdomen is manipulated in such a way that it turns head down.
  • Your Braxton Hocks contractions may become more frequent and intense.
  • You may notice small electric darts in your legs and around your vagina, this may be caused by the baby touching nerves in your pelvis.
  • Thought of a name yet? Try our baby namer tool.
  • You may feel fatigue or you may feel more energetic, both are normal.
  • With the baby deep in your pelvis, and your bladder being squashed, you will be visiting the bathroom more often.
  • Many women lose their mucus plug a week or two before delivery (though for others it doesn?t happen until right before delivery). If the mucus is pink or streaked with blood, it is known as the 'bloody show' and usually means labor will begin within the next day
  • Use this time to rest and prepare for the birth.
  • Keep in mind that your due date is only an estimate, the bad news is that you may not deliver for another 2 weeks.
  • You are only over-due two weeks after your due date. You may be induced if your doctor has decided that your pregnancy has gone on long enough.
  • Good luck! Let us know when your baby is born and how you got on.

    • Have a baby car seat to bring the baby home in.
    • Decide where the baby is going to sleep and set up his cot/moses basket.
    • Make sure you have nappies, clothes, milk and other essentails. You may have time after he is born to do this, but you may not have the energy.

  • Every labour is different and every woman is different, so don't listen to labour horror stories from other women.

  • If you haven't discussed your pain relief options with your doctor, do so now.
