Home Birth Safety
Child births out of hospitals are not an established method of delivery in the United States. Although they are attended by midwives who are licensed as per international standards, the safety and procedure are not attested. This has been the result of a nine year research conducted in Washington State.Home birth statistics
When a number of out-of-the-hospital child births - home births were compared against the child births that took placed in hospitals under the care of qualified doctors and certified nurses between 1981 and 1990, the out-of-hospital births had a lower birth weight and scored low on the five minute Agpar scores and post-neonatal and neonatal mortality rates. However, when the ratios were compared between certified nurses and professional midwives, the professional midwives seemed to be one up with a lower incidence of low birth weight compared to the certified nurses. This indicates that the performance of licensed midwives outside hospitals is as good as the certified nurses in hospitals in Washington State.
Possible disadvantages of home delivery
Facilities of emergency procedures, however, cannot be made available at homes and therefore child birth in hospitals is most preferred way of delivery even today. The risk to the mother and the child through factors of environment or any other emergencies arising out of any unforeseen circumstances make it more viable to have the child birth in a hospital rather than at home.
