First Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy

There are many different signs of pregnancy, some women will experience almost all the common symptoms of pregnancy, while anothers will not. There is no fixed set of signs of pregnancy, but there are some common first signs which may indicate that you COULD be pregnant.

Missed Period

This is probably one of the more reliable first signs of pregnancy. Although some women will experience implantation bleeding about the time of their period, it is usually lighter and/or shorter than their normal period. This is why you are asked for the first day of your last normal period. There are even a few women who will have period throughout their pregnancy, although this is rare, it does happen.

Breast Tenderness

Breast tenderness is experienced by many women, both during pregnancy and prior to their periods. This usually goes away during the second trimester, or it may be experienced as a heighten sensitivity. This can be a good thing for some women.

Morning sickness

Around half to two thirds of all pregnant women experience some degree of morning sickness, especially in the first few months. The symptoms include nausea and vomiting. For most women, morning sickness begins around the fourth week of pregnancy and resolves by the 12th week. Apart from pregnancy, nausea and vomiting can be caused by other factors including:
  • Food poisoning
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Some types of infection.

Frequent urination

Pregnancy prompts increased levels of body fluids and greater kidney efficiency. The swelling uterus also presses against the bladder. Most women start experiencing more frequent urination within the first few weeks of conception. Apart from pregnancy, frequent urination can be caused by other factors including Urinary tract infections, Diabetes or Diuretic medications.

Positive Test

Pregnancy tests are now an accurate way of confirming pregnancy, many tests are 98%+ accurate, but you may need to wait a number of days after your period is due before it can detect pregnancy. There are Early pregnancy tests available now. Top 10 pregnancy signs your doctor doesn't tell you about
