Introduction
Child Benefit is payable to the parents or guardians of children under 16 years of age, (under 19 years of age if the child is in full-time education or has a disability). To apply for child benefit, send a claim form and the child's birth certificate to the Child Benefit Section of the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs.If your child is over 16 has a disability or is in full-time education, you will need to send some supporting documents with your application. If you had a multiple birth you will be entitled to a special grant at the time of birth and when they are four and twelve years old. Child benefit is payable at one and a half times the monthly rate for twins, and at double the monthly rate for triplets and other multiple births.
Duration of Child Benefit
Child benefit is payable until your child reaches the age of 16. It is payable until your child reaches the age of 19 if your child is in full-time education or has a disability.What do I have to do?
To get your child benefit entitlement you must do each of the following- Get the birth certificate from the General Register Office. You will be given two copies of the birth certificate. One copy is for social welfare purposes, this is the copy you should send away.
- Fill in form CB1 (you can request a postal copy here, or download the form online, see links below) and send it with a copy of the child's birth certificate.
- If you are seeking payment of child benefit after your child has reached the age of 16, you must fill in the CB2 form. This claim form must be certified by the school/college if your child is in full-time education, or by a doctor if your child has a disability.

Child Benefit Rates
From April 2003, the rate for the first and second child will be125.60 euro.
The rate for third and subsequent children will be
157.30 euro.
