Beauty treatment during pregnancy
Most women are aware that certain beauty treatments are not to be used or over-used when they are pregnant. But what is the real story. Are they really harmful or is it over-hyped.There is little quality information from experts as to what is allowed, what should be OK in moderation and what is downright harmful to the unborn baby and the pregnant mother.
Dying hair is one treatment that has come into question. The strong chemicals that are used in that process can be absorbed into the skin. It has been observer that women who have had their hair dyed, show traces of the chemicals in their urine many hours later.
What is not understood is how much a foetus is exposed to these chemicals and what effect they have on the foetus.
Over the years, people have conducted animal studies trying to shed light on this matter. Some, but not all, studies have shown a few of the chemical compounds in hair dyes to be teratogenic (causing birth defects). However, in many cases the animals were exposed to extremely high doses of these chemicals, doses in no way equivalent to the exposure of the woman who colours her hair every month or two.
If you apply the dyes safely (using gloves in a well-ventilated room, and not leaving solutions on for excessive periods of time), you don't really absorb much of the chemicals into your system. These dyes have been around for quite a while now and there is no significant evidence of danger.
Women like to feel good about themselves during, before and after pregnancy. If you do want to color your hair while pregnant, follow the instructions on the product closely.

I really love the show 'I didn't know I was pregnant'. I had to have a c-section, but at least I didn't give birth in a toilet. Unknowingly.
