Health Plan

Obviously, the cost of having a baby will vary from country to country but most countries operate private health insurance cover. This can be necessary if the public health system is not adequate or you want a little bit more options.

Here we will try to point out what you should look for in a good health plan, specifically for pregnancy.

  1. Try to have health insurance before you get pregnant. If you haven't had insurance coverage at all and then get insured through a group plan, the new health plan does not have to immediately cover your pregnancy and could make you wait a couple of months before coverage is offered. They may not cover pregnancy at all, if you are pregnant when you initially join. Check with your local provider.
  2. If you have health insurance as an employee benefit, talk to your employer about which health plan you are under and if there are any additional benefits for pregnancy with that scheme. If you have recently changed jobs, find out when the plan kicks in and is there a waiting period before pregnancy cover becomes effective.
  3. Find out what your plan covers and more importantly what id doesn't cover. Remember to include things like immediate cover for your baby, possible post-birth complications, alternative therapies etc.
  4. Talk to other parents and your doctor, they may be able to point you in the right direction and help you pick the correct health plan.
  5. Talk to your oby, they may not work with your health insurance company.
  6. Under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, a pregnancy is not considered a pre-existing condition, which means switching plans while pregnant should not be a problem. There are some exceptions, however and it is best to check it out before it's too late.

Apart from the tips above, the usual health plan advice is applicable. Talk to others and find out what plan they used and if it was effective - remember health insurance becomes more useful when there is a problem. Talk to your doctor and staff at the hospital and get their views on the best plan for pregnancy and beyond.
