Family Health Insurance

In different countries family health insurance may be a necessity to receive the best treatment in the quickest possible timeframe or it may be a luxury if the public health system is good. Either way it is no harm to know what you local family health insurance covers and what your public health service provides.

We have some health insurance coverage information about Ireland which will help you to make up your mind about your health insurance needs.

Your Needs

When you are specifically talking about family cover, there are a few points which should be considered. You are not only getting cover for yourself, but also for your partner and children. This makes it a more important decision.

You need to assess you and your family's needs and budget to decide what type of policy you need and what health care services you want covered. Health insurance for families is more expensive than an individual health insurance policy because there are more people covered and the scope of coverage is likely to be larger.

What to look for

Health insurance is always a balancing act between cost and risk, but when you want to cover an entire family, the calculations change a little bit.

For example, even if the flexibility of a fee-for-service (indemnity) policy appeals to you, you should consider the cost of an entire family's worth of preventative medicine (which traditionally isn't covered under an indemnity policy.) Having to pay out-of-pocket for the annual check-ups of six people is a big expense.

Another consideration is whether or not your existing physician is covered by the health insurance, especially if you would like to stay with that physician.

Policy

When you get your insurance policy, make sure it covers everything that you expected it to. The policy lists a package of medical benefits such as tests, drugs and treatment services. The insurance company agrees to cover the cost of certain benefits listed in your policy. These are called "covered services."

Your policy also lists the kinds of services that are not covered by your insurance company. You have to pay for any uncovered medical care that you receive.

Keep in mind that a medical necessity is not the same as a medical benefit. A medical necessity is something that your doctor has decided is necessary. A medical benefit is something that your insurance plan has agreed to cover. In some cases, your doctor might decide that you need medical care that is not covered by your health plan.

If you study the various plans and talk to people you already have insurance , they can guide you in the right direction. Also, ask your physician which family health insurance package they would recommend. Find out more about your child's health issues.
