This rate increase has concerned health officials, who believe it is time to rethink their strategy when it comes to dealing with diabetes in pregnancy.
Many women suffer from a temporary condition known as gestational diabetes. A woman can develop the disease, and their blood sugar levels become difficult to control. Doctors believe that some miscarriages may have been triggered by this condition.
A growing number of Canadian women and other nationalities are developing the condition during pregnancy, and more appear to have full-blown Type 2 diabetes.
Gestational diabetes can turn into permanent diabetes later in life, boosting a woman's risk of kidney failure, blindness and heart disease.
The disease may also be harmful to a baby during pregnancy, causing them to grow much larger than normal and in some cases, causing birth defects or still births.
