Activities for Children

Songs are an excellent activity for both children and their parents. All children like the rhythm of childrens music and singing along is great fun. It can also be educational, teaching children to use different sounds and tones. See some suitable songs at Childrens Songs.

Poetry is also a fun activity that you and your child can undertake. Again it is great fun and a good educational tool. See our poem below and more examples in our Childrens Poetry.

Another popular child activity is arts and crafts, children love to get their "hands dirty" making something that they can admire afterwards, these crafts can improve their motor skills and also give them a calming activity to enjoy, see our Pinata craft below

A Pinata

To make a pinata, you will need
  • 1 - 9" - 25" sturdy,empty helium balloon
  • Optional smaller balloons
  • 12" wide strips of newspaper
  • Decoupage glue
  • Sharp scissors
  • Candy or small toys for filling
Inflate the balloon and tying a knot in the end. You can tape several balloons together to create the shape you want your piņata to be but a oval is the easiest shape to work with. Carefully dip the strips on newspaper into the decoupage and gently lay it across the balloon working vertically until it is covered. Continue covering the balloon in the opposite direction horizontally. You can continue adding newspaper strips until the balloon feels solid and firm. When it is dry, use a pin to pop the balloon. Next paint the balloon whatever color you wish and embellish it as desired. Find a place where the a hole will not be easily noticed and cut three sides of a square to create a door that can be opened. Fill your pinata.

The game is played by blindfolding children and letting them hit the pinata with a stick or plastic bat. To insure that every child gets a turn we line kids up by age and only allow them 3 hits.

Toddler Activities

Empty & Fill

Toddlers love emptying and re-filling objects. Play sand is an ideal material to use. If you have a sand pit, add some empty buckets and your child will have hours of fun. Sand can be a bit messy for indoors, but you can use anything. Try a bucket or jar and put beans or pebbles into it. Make sure that the items you use are not so small that your child could choke on them. See our online toddler games.

Toys

We all know toys are possibly the favoured activity of all children and they can be great learning tools. We recommend the following precautions when choosing toys especially for young children.
  • sturdy, unbreakable, not likely to break into small pieces and strong enough for child to stand on or in.
  • nontoxic materials.
  • no sharp points or edges.
  • too large to be lodged in windpipe, ears, nostrils.
  • no detachable small pans.
  • no parts that could pinch or entrap fingers, toes, hair.
  • not put together with easily exposed straight pins, sham wires, nails.
  • no electrical parts, unless supervised by adult.

Books

One of the oldest and most loved forms of child activities are books, there is such a variety of books available for children, it can be hard to choose one. We have compiled some popular childrens books here for your consideration.
