| 1 | Consider that the name you pick will stay with your baby for life. Consider how the name sounds when it is applied to an adult aswell as a baby. |
| 2 | Avoid names which could cause your child to be picked on at school e.g. try to avoid names for boys which could also be girls names - Chris, Robin. |
| 3 | Consider the meaning of a name. It is not very important but it can be a nice reason for picking a certain name. |
| 4 | Try syaing the name out loud before you pick it. Do this over a couple of days to allow you to get used to it. |
| 5 | Consider how the name will fit with your surname. Do not use a name with the same ending sound as the beginning sound of your surname. |
| 6 | Consider names in your family tree. It can be a good way to keep a family name going and to remember a family member. If the family member is still alive this can cause confusion e.g. calling a boy after its father can cause confusion in later life. |
| 7 | Avoid stereotypes. Avoid names associated with unwanted personality traits. |
| 8 | Finally, if you have broken all of the tips above and you have found a name which you like, then use it. You have to make the decision and it is you who has to be happy with the new name. |
