Assessment of a Premature Child’s Skills

While assessing a child’s correct age, one could subtract the number of weeks of prematurity of the baby from the actual chronological age. The development of a premature baby is a little different than a normal aged baby and requires a little evaluation to assess their
performance in school.

Premature baby development

Premature or normal, developmental evaluation is a yardstick to measure the child’s performance according to the age. For conducting a developmental evaluation, the areas of tests could be
  • language skills - progression in speaking and understanding speech.
  • attention and concentration levels
  • social behavior with their peers
  • logical analysis and problem solving
  • fine motor skills like eye-hand coordination
  • gross motor skills like using muscles for physical movement

Assessing premies

In assessing the above areas, the child’s quality of performance should be taken into consideration. The child’s strategy in attempting to solve the problems, the concentration level and behavior while attempting them and the child’s response to the whole exercise itself are also important factors. Analyzing these factors could give us a better direction towards the steps to be taken to improve the child’s development. It is important to understand that many a skill consistently present in adults are not present in infants and each infant has it’s own way and timing to develop these skills. Motor skills for example, develop a little slowly at a younger age and accelerate during childhood.

All preemies will have certain problems as they develop, however most will lead perfectly normal lives and catch up with those babies who were full term births. You GP will be able to discuss all aspects of premature birth from development to formula.
