What is Eczema
Eczema is another name for a kind of intense itching that can lead to further irritability resulting in stress and insomnia. Eczema is also known as atopic dermatitis. The itching sensation when scratched leads to rashes and vice versa. This cyclic, if not treated on time can lead to roughness of the skin also known as lichenification or dryness known as xerosis. These conditions are perfect breeding grounds for infections.
Eczema symptoms
Eczema has its own unique symptoms is. It could be eczema if,
- The itching is chronic
- The itching is caused in an infant
- If your heredity is rich with atopy, a unique combination of asthma, allergic rhinitis and hay-fever.
Eczema normally effects the
- back of arms, on the front of legs and faces in case of infants and children
- inner skin folds of arms, back of knees and neck folds
Eczema Care
If a child has ezcema, the following should be avoided- Never scratch or rub, this will lead to further irritation and subsequent side-effects.
- Avoid touching irritating material which can trigger off the itch-scratch cycle. Most common irritants are soaps, woolen clothing, pet soaps, wet work, sweating and exercise.
- Undergo a patch test. Eczema may also be the result of an irritant or a allergen. Only a dermatologist can tell you what your skin is allergic to.
- Eczema can also be the result of a food allergy. Watch your eating.
- Try and manage the itch. Using antihistamines, moisturizers and gentle soaps may help.
- Try and prevent dryness. Hydrating the effected skin with proper baths and try using non-aromatic moisturizers.
