Choosing a Child care facility

Choosing a child care facility is one of the most consuming jobs a mother can face. Entrusting the care of a loved child can sometimes be heart wrenching, especially when the person you are entrusting the care to is taking
care of 20 others. The influences of the group over your child and the separation form the child for the stipulated period becomes a hard decision most times. So, choosing the right child care facility is very important.

  1. Get a background check done: For licenses from state and a thorough background.
  2. Check credentials: The provider should have first aid credentials, CPR credentials, special training for the handicapped, teachers credentials and word of mouth.
  3. Take a test: Let your child play with others and check reactions. Make surprise visits to check on the providers. Listen to the children’s feedback.
  4. Check out the facility: For food arrangements, check kitchens and hygiene. Check the sanitation in toilets and look at the toys and their maintenance. Check child/teacher ratio.
  5. What are their policies: Policies in regard to accidents, fights and other aspects should be researched and taken into account.
  6. Make sure the above are checked before deciding upon child care, it is your child’s life at stake.

Types of child care

The following are some of the options you can choose from if you need to use child care facilities

A Relative - You could ask a relative who has experience with children to look after your child. The advantage is that they will already know each other.

A Child care center - Should be staffed by properly trained carers and the ratio of carers to children should not be too high.

A care giver/nanny - This may be the best option if you want your children cared for in your own home and it can be a more flexible option.

One of the most important points to cover when choosing somewhere to care for your child is how much attention your child will get. Is the ratio of carers to children adequate, are the carers trained and enthusiastic. We have a child care checklist to help you select the correct facility for your children.
